A New Sheriff in Town (For Now)

Caretaker Prime Minister Yair Lapid officially took over his post from PM Naftali Bennett over the weekend. In his first cabinet meeting Lapid said his goal was “to manage the government as if there are no elections,” referring to Israel’s upcoming November 1, Knesset elections. Will it be possible for the new PM to achieve this goal and effectively run the country, or will he be too busy making sure that his Yesh Atid faction does well when Israel goes to the polls after the high holidays? Josh Hasten discusses this story along with all the other headlines from Israel on this week’s “Israel Uncensored,” podcast.

New Elections or a New Government from Within?

Will Israel be headed to its fifth Knesset elections in the past three and a half years or will an opposition member – namely former Prime Minister Netanyahu succeed in forming a government within the current Knesset? The Israeli public should have an answer to that question by the end of the week. At the same time the EU obsession with trying to bring Iran into the mainstream world community continues with Josep Borrell, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy at the EU, reportedly visiting Tehran. Israel’s Foreign Minister (and possible interim Prime Minister) Yair Lapid was not too pleased with the visit, on the heels of reports that the Iranians had plotted to murder Israelis in Turkey. Razor-Thin Coalition Takes Over Under New PM Bennett

Amidst jeers from his detractors, new Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett was sworn in last night as Israel’s 13th Prime Minister, with a razor-thin majority of support from 60 MK’s. From his new perch as head of the opposition, former Prime Minister Netanyahu vowed that his Likud Party would be back leading the country shortly. A turbulent Knesset session featured nearly constant hecklers from Bennett’s political foes when he spoke, while Netanyahu’s speech also faced some interruptions. Will the government last a full four years? What are some of the obstacles in Bennett’s path? And how about the looming Iranian threat? These topics and more news from Israel on this week’s Israel Uncensored with Josh Hasten.

The Shaky Coalition

While Prime Minister Netanyahu is trying to salvage his government, indications at this point show that Israel could be headed towards early elections. Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman has already resigned, and while Ministers Bennett and Shaked this morning decided to remain in the government, can Netanyahu somehow hang on with a razor thin 61-seat majority in the Knesset? Also, despite the political turmoil and the chaos caused by Hamas this past week firing nearly 500 rockets at Israeli towns, Israel is on pace for a record number of tourists visiting the Jewish State in 2018. Josh Hasten discusses these topics and everything else making news on this weeks’ “Israel Uncensored.”

Shut Down UNRWA

On today’s Israel Uncensored with Josh Hasten an exclusive interview with Dr. Einat Wilf, former member of Knesset, renowned author and leading intellectual. Dr. Wilf has been busy lately explaining why UNRWA should be shut down. The US State Department, in fact, announced over the weekend that they would stop funding UNRWA, which for 70 years has perpetuated the conflict between Israel and the Arab world. Wilf insists that we need a global campaign against the Arab propaganda which insists on the so-called “right of return,” which she explains doesn’t exist. Wilf doesn’t believe any Arab counties will step in and fund UNRWA as they are not interested in doing so, as they insist the “refugee” issue is a UN problem. In fact, those “refugees” Wilf explains don’t even exist as UNRWA has inflated their numbers tremendously by including children and grandchildren of “refugees” under the same umbrella.
